Tohora Nui - Waiata-a-ringa lesson.

When on practicum in a new entrants class, I taught a Maori music/art lesson focused on whales. First I read the legend "The seven whales of Ngai Tahu" and then we sang the Maori waiata-a-ringa "Tohora Nui" which is also about a whale. This helped teach the children what a waiata-a-ringa is and gave them the opportunity to perform one. Once the children had learnt the song and accompanying actions, they all drew a whale picture with jovies, which we then dyed blue and hung on the wall along with the song lyrics.
